Over the course of the past year, Walgreens and Express Scripts have been in negotiations. Despite Walgreens not seeking an increase in rates, the negotiations were unsuccessful. As a result, the contract expired on December 31, 2011. Effective January 1, 2012, Walgreens is no longer part of the Express Scripts pharmacy provider network. This affects many pharmacy patients who now must find a new pharmacy in order to utilize their in-network benefits. For many, this involves a longer drive to a pharmacy with less convenient hours. Walgreens offers more 24-hour pharmacies and more drive-thru pharmacies than any other pharmacy in the country for their patients’ busy schedules.
The men and women of the U.S. military are greatly affected by this unnecessary change. Tricare is the health and prescription program of the U.S. military. Tricare is an Express Scripts client. Walgreens took an unprecedented step during negotiations. Walgreens offered Express Scripts an airtight guarantee that prices at Walgreens would meet or beat the average costs per adjusted prescription of all other pharmacies in the Tricare Network. Walgreens did not want our country’s military stuck in the middle. The offer to contract separately with Express Scripts for Tricare was also made by Walgreens, but was rejected as well.
Walgreens wishes to help those patients who have been customers of Walgreens for years and who have built a personal relationship with their pharmacist. Walgreens is offering a special discount on an annual membership in the Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens. During the month of January, individuals can join for $5 and families can join for just $10. Members receive savings on all generic medications, and on over 8,000 brand name medications. Normally, membership is $20 for individuals and $35 for families.
